Delaying vaccines: “Until I can’t evade it any longer”

Nathan

Julee Huy’s pediatricians had always told her vaccines were safe, and she immunized her first four children without much thought. But her fourth child, Nathan, has autism. Now with her youngest child, 18 months old, she is making the decision to wait (though she says she doesn’t know whether Nathan’s autism is connected to his vaccinations). How long will she wait? She still doesn’t know.

I asked the Yorba Linda mom how she struggled with the decision and how her doctors have responded. Here’s what she wrote:

“The decision to delay vaccines with our fifth child after our fourth child was diagnosed with autism was both difficult and easy. It was difficult only in that we would have to go against the trend and jump in with those who are considered to be banking on everyone else’s vaccinations. It was easy because there was the risk of autism and we knew we didn’t want that for our son, nor could we afford it emotionally, financially or physically. “We had always been on a delayed schedule of sorts for the older children because we just didn’t keep up on our office visits. There was one time when the pediatrician “caught them up” for their school vaccinations; I just wish I knew then what I do now. I have often wondered if some of my other children’s issues are because of that day.

“We were told that the vaccines were perfectly safe.

“We discussed it with our doctor and asked him which vaccines he thought were crucial in the first year or two of life. He gave us his thoughts and opinions and then we left his office. We’ve since discussed the matter and decided to delay them all. I do not know at this point what our vaccine schedule will be for this child. I’d like to see him hit some milestones before I will start injecting him with any heavy metals or viruses.

“We have run into some interesting and stressful decisions with this child because he has needed stitches twice! The first time we were in the ER, they talked to us about the tetanus shot but would only offer it in mixed form, the DTaP. We opted out of it that time. The second time was recently and vaccines were not discussed.

“I’ve learned with pediatricians that often they will go with the common standards unless you specifically ask what their opinions are. Our current pediatrician would probably suggest we give a few of the shots, but honestly, we just don’t visit him.

“I often consider not vaccinating my youngest until the shots are clean. I don’t know at what age I’m going to want to take the chance of seeing my child regress and slip away from me. Vaccines are something I am evading until I can’t evade it any longer.

“My youngest is 18 months. When will I start vaccines? Two years old? Three, four, five? When he is vaccinated it will be when he is well. Some vaccines will be taken one at a time like the MMR and some I will skip all together. ”

  • Drew says:

There is NO LAW in California that states you must vaccinate your children and every month or year there is another story of vaccinations harming our children. Why would you put ANYTHING into your child that is no proven safe? Would you drink mercury out of a thermometer?

  • SEAN IN NEWPORT BEACH says:

Delaying vaccination should be cause for arrest due to child abuse & if the child gets sick & spreads a fatal disease to other children
manslaughter charges should be levied against the parents

  • Christina says:

I would certainly not vaccinate. The amount of vaccines given to a child is too much for their little bodies to handle. They should definetly be given at a longer sparadic time. Some of them are not even needed anymore. Do your research, they are believed to be the cause of autisim. Something has to change.

  • Drew says:

Why would you care if another child is vaccinated or not if yours is “safe”. Research the Vaccination Compensation Fund and actually do some research, we made it many tens of thousands of years with our immune system, i really think it is more sanitation, etc.

  • BTC says:

    Drew:

There may be no law, but public schools in California require a set # of vaccinations. You’d be hard pressed to send your child to school without the plethora of cocktail injections required.

    It’s a catch-22 that sucks.

  • Drew says:

Actually no, my children are not vaccinated, rarely get sick and have had NO PROBLEMS getting into daycare/school, you just need to educate yourself, there is NO LAW in California or the U.S. besides N.Y. for Vaccinations, it is called a “Personal Beliefs Exemption”, here is the law Directly from the State of California:

The law allows (a) parents/guardians to choose an exemption from immunization requirements based on their
personal beliefs, and (b) physicians of children to elect medical exemptions. The law does not allow parents/
guardians to elect an exemption simply because of inconvenience (a record is lost or incomplete and it is too
much trouble to go to a physician or clinic to correct the problem). See the back of the blue California School
Immunization Record (PM 286) for instructions and the affidavit to be signed by parents/guardians electing the
personal beliefs exemption. For children with medical exemptions, the physician’s written statement should
be stapled to the CSIR. Schools should maintain an up-to-date list of pupils with exemptions, so they can be
excluded quickly if an outbreak occurs.

Now if it was so dangerous and everyone is going to die if 1 kid does not get vaccinated, do you not think it would be mandatory? Yes it is a catch 22 but we as parents need to be informed and stand by our children health, no one, not the school, doctor NO ONE cares for your kids like parents do. Kids in State or County custody are 5 times more likely to be abused. Educate yourselves and not with FOX tv.

  • Jake says:

Maybe the reason the rate has increased is because physicians are finally diagnosing it correctly. There are several degrees of Autism that have been mistakingly absorbed with other behavior disorders.

Maybe in the Amish communities they aren’t diagnosing at all or from what kind of doctor - a vet.

Parents need to do thier own reseach and find a pedatrition that is thinking in the same terms you are. Just as if you were choosing a doctor to help you battle cancer. You have to find the right fit.

Stay away from people like “Drew” who shove thier plight down your throat. More “non government& non pharmasutical” studies need to be conducted to find the corralating factors. Genetics, DNA, damaged chromozones that interact badly with some imunization cocktails. Real doctors looking for real break-thru’s.

Know you facts from suppazition, DON’T RELY ON MEDIA TO PROVIDE YOU INFORMATION, seek it out. Find a good pedatrition who is a fit for your plan and gives you options. One persons experience should not be your determining factor on your childs heath. Do you reseach, ask questions.

  • Melissa says:

When you begin to let the government tell you how to take care of your children then we are no longer free. Would you let some stranger off of the street tell you how to take care of your kids because all these corrupt political officials who make up these stupid laws all receive money (lots of money) from the big pharmaceutical companies and they are strangers….it’s not in the best interest of your children. They don’t care about you or me or our children. Ask them why they don’t vaccinate their own children if it’s so safe and beneficial. Yep, that’s right they don’t vaccinate their own. Go look it up….the internet is a wonderful thing. Also would you voluntarily shoot up formaldehyde or chick embryos? How about mercury? That so-called preservative Themerasol that they put in the vaccines took the place of mercury but it’s still mercury. It’s just in smaller amounts and they feel they don’t have to tell us about it. Some doctor’s do know that and knowingly lie to you others just don’t know. They make mother’s feel stupid for even questioning it. It’s not stupid and you have every right to question it. Mercury is toxic to humans in any amount so why would you risk your child’s health? If they are so safe why is the Vaccination Compensation Fund already exhausted? Over 900 children are harmed or die each year due to vaccines. That’s 900 too many. Use common sense…..these are our children we’re talking about. It was either the state supreme court or the federal court that just recently ruled in favor of the parents claim that the vaccines are the cause of harm that was done to their child. My kids NEVER get sick and if they do they’re over it within a day because their immune systems haven’t been compromised by those vaccines……their immune system is doing what it’s supposed to do….fight diseases. Just an FYI…earaches never existed until vaccines were introduced to us and the Amish community who do not participate in any of our programs don’t have diseases. In fact, there’s never been one reported case of Autism amongst the Amish except for one……..and that kid had received vaccines.

  • Tom says:

If there was even a shred of evidence linking vaccines to autism don’t you think there would be at least one successful lawsuit in this country against the vaccine manufacturers and the pediatricians?

  • Drew says:

Yeah just like there was evidence of WMD’s in Iraq too or the countless other lies the Government tells us daily, it is a parents decision and not mine. I do not have a “plight” or a child with Autism, just spreading real information, not propaganda. How many times a week does a drug company pulls an item off the shelves for killing someone? Come on man; if you are going to talk trashes at least come with some facts not opinion. I can back my mouth up 100% with precious Government and private figures can you? When did we become so complacent and believe everything we are told. It is American to question people, not the other way around, there is nothing wrong with asking questions and researching for yourself, they are your kids, right? Jenny McCarthy has reversed her son’s autism, it is more than vaccines, it is the GMO in the food, stuff in the air we pump daily, there are many factors, my point is why inject something into your kid that you do not even know what is in it? Numbers and science do not lie, the government does and was proven again with Cheney fudging global warming reports, the lies never end. What did I say that was so out there, they are not my opinions they are the Governments, if you want to attack someone attack them. We are all in this together as Americans, if you want to have an intelligent debate fine.

  • Use google to discover how vaccines are made, and what they are made of. You wouldn’t want to be in the same room with it, let alone have it injected into your child.

  • Tom says:

Fine Drew, name one successful lawsuit brought on behalf of an autistic child against one single vaccine manufacturer. This is the most litigious society on Earth. Surely someone who can “back up their mouth 100%” will be able to find hundreds if not thousands of successful cases.

  • jason says:

    Melissa-

My body makes formaldehyde, and so does yours. No need to shoot it up. But even if you did, your body has a very efficient mechanism for eliminating it. What you and others in this debate don’t seem to understand about toxicity is that it is directly related to the volume of the substance. In the case of formaldehyde, your body makes it for the purpose of DNA synthesis and protein construction from amino acids.

You say mercury is “toxic to humans in any amount”. That is a vague and inaccurate claim. It is toxic at a relatively small amount and especially if the exposure is chronic. It is a dangerous substance but can be handled safely with the right measures.

As for your weird, wild claims about the Amish…you need to study up! They have much higher incidences of many types of disease than the general population. Do you know why they don’t have autism? It has nothing to do with vaccines, but everything to do with the cause of autism, which appears to be around 90% genetic. The Amish come from a few very distinct gene pools and breed, for the most part, only between those pools.

  • myra says:

    look at this

  • jason says:

Google how sausage is made- it’s pretty nasty but it sure tastes good.

Ever seen heart surgery? That looks horrific! But it sure is a good idea to endure it if it can save your life. Same for vaccines.

I do not understand how the unattractiveness of a process used to create a useful or valuable product can make that product less useful or valuable.

  • Tom says:

The Hannah Poling case does not even come close. The court said that she developed a fever that MAY have exacerbated her existing mitochondrial disease. Fever is one of the side-effects of any vaccination. She could have also developed the fever from other sources but for arguments sake let’s say it did cause her fever. That is still not a direct link between vaccinations and autism.

  • It is obvious to parents who see the behavioral change in their children after innoculation with vaccines that the developmental change was caused by the shot. This empirical evidence will someday be as clear as it is now that cigarettes cause lung cancer. At one time, this was not obvious to everyone either, as noted int eh Debakey obit yesterday: ” DeBakey noticed that all the lung cancer patients in their hospital wards were smokers. At the time, most experts attributed the startling increase in lung cancer cases to the 1918 flu epidemic or exposure to poison gases in World War I. In 1939, DeBakey and Ochsner published the first scientific paper linking lung cancer to cigarettes.”

  • Corey says:

    Drew has said it best.

I applaud anyone who decides not to vaccinate their children. It’s well documented that heavy metals and other ingredients are in these vaccines.

  • Kevin says:

I just cam back from the Autism Society of America’s National Conference in Orlando. Vaccinations MAY not be the root cause of Autism, but is simply cannot be ignored as a triggering mechanism of some form. If it is ignored, then please explain to me how many children start to the manifestation of autism traits mainly after the MMR vaccine is given? Something is triggering Autism in our children, and it is to coincidental that a vast majority of these occur after the MMR vaccine.

Tom, do you have a child with Autism? Do you know the anguish and the agony of trying to do everything you can to have your child function like a typicla child? Do you understand what it is like to have to fight with the school district every year to ensure your child receives the services that are the most appropriate to help them achieve an independent life? I would venture the answer would be NO!

Austism is a pandemic throughout the world and it is growing large everyday. This government spends billions of dollars on AIDS research, but spends barely anything on Autism research. AIDS is something that is preventable — AUTISM IS NOT!!

I am the father of a child with autism, and I myseld have Asperger’s Syndrome. I know what it is like to be in the world of Autism and fight for everyghint my son needs.

  • Tom says:

Kevin, I do not have a child with Autism so perhaps I may be a little more open minded on the subject. To say there is a link between the MMR and autism is like assuming that your alarm clock is responsible for the rising of the Sun each morning because they both happen at the same time.

  • jason says:

There is no evidence that links vaccines to autism.

There is no evidence Thimerosal causes autism.

There is no evidence mercury exposure causes autism.

Drew, empirical evidence is among the weakest. It is merely a starting point for real research. The real research has shown, time and time again, that there is no link between vaccines and autism.

Something tells me you could use a little medicating yourself. Did you even read the link you posted to Tom about Bayer? I don’t think you did because it doesn’t even come close to supporting what you claim it does. SSRI drugs causing diabetes? Are you out of your mind?

  • Kevin says:

Tom, you still have not explained then why 90% of all cases of Autism occur within a very short period of time after the MMR shot is given.

Tom, answer this then. Why do children who are otherwise healthy, meeting their growth milestones, talking, then receive the MMR vaccine, and then stop talking and start to regress into their own world?

After the Pollard case, the CDC came out with a brief comment that they even admitted there MAY have been a causal link between the vaccines and the cause of Autism.

There are over 4,800 cases sitting in the “Autism Court” wiaiting to be heard. Please don’t tell me all of these people are wrong.

  • Tom says:

Kevin, one need only look at Japan which as I am sure you know pulled the MMR vaccine in 1993. Their study of over 30,000 children since then has shown that Autism is increasing at the same rate as it is in the United States.

  • Lisa says:

Given the rapid increase in autism and a myriad of other maladies once rare in children also on the rise such as diabetes, asthma, ADD/ADHD and more - the AAP has some serious confidence building manuevers to peform. The public is scared by vaccination policy for a lot of reasons. Ask any lady expecting a baby - they want to keep their baby safe from preventable diseases AND prevent autism, diabetes, asthma, ADD/ADHD and others things as well.

We are in a time of change. While this issue is heated I would prefer on finding solid answers for PREVENTION and SAFETY for all children - not a subset.

Currently - the AAP has work to do. Parents are scared. And I am one of them

  • Preston says:

Does anyone have a recommendation for a great pediatrician in the Huntington/Newport area that is willing to do a modified vaccination schedule and who uses the [what is considered] safer brands of vaccinations? I’ve been looking, and they’re harder to find than one would think. Thanks!

  • Kevin: Autism Society of America is off the mark on vaccines–always have been. Check out Autism.com, and NVIC.org.
Drew–shills are out there because the vaccine makers have so much to lose if the truth comes out. Good job delineating the truth.
Parents: catch your kindly pediatrician in an off moment or better yet, an educated immunologist, and ask about vaccines. They can’t tell the truth because the AMA steamroller will bust them and their careers.
WHAT PRODUCT GETS US GOVERNMENT MANDATE AND LIABILITY FREEDOM other than Vaccines? That kind of cash cow doesn’t go quietly into the night, even if it’s costing the lives and livelihoods of millions.

  • jason says:

Maybe people wouldn’t be scared of vaccinations if people afflicted with the diseases vaccinations prevent were walking around as obvious reminders to those who eschew rational, critical thought in favor of loudly proclaimed psuedoscience.

  • jason says:

Seriously, all the vaccine detractors have to do is come up with a single study that shows any autism risk from any vaccine and their credibility would skyrocket.

Instead, they trumpet a D-list celebrity who co-hosted a MTV game show.

  • Susie says:

You MUST do your research on vaccinations. Never blindly trust your pediatrician/doctor to tell you what vaccines your child needs and when he/she “needs” them. Quite frankly, most doctors don’t have the foggiest idea about vaccinations. They are told what to recommend… and they recommend it. No thought or common sense put into their recommendations at all. Do your homework people…

  • By the way, Jason–no one’s passion runs that high in favor of vaccinating–how much do they pay you?

  • joe says:

    jason check out these credientals

This is the man and his credentials who the CDC says we are supposed to ignore

It was mentioned earlier that Dr. Frank Engley studied thimerosal as far back as 1942. Dr. Engley is responsible for the 4 year School of Medicine at the University of Missouri. He has consulted for the CDC, IOM, NASA, FDA, EPA, CIA, AAMI, USP, Armed Forces Epidemiological boards, Army, Navy, Air Force as well as Director of research grants and training grants for NIH. Engley Served on the Council of the NIH Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and a consultant on many Epidemiological Boards too many to list.
Dr. Engley has been a visiting Professor in over 40 foreign countries medical schools. He has produced films, written text books, Laboratory Manuals, over 100 publications, served on editorial boards for numerous scientific journals and periodicals, including four American, two British and one German. Engley is certified by the American Board of Micro Biology and served as the Chair of the Laboratory of American Public Health Association. He has been listed in American Men and Women of Science, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who among Consultants and Who’s Who in the World.
His toxicity studies of mercurials in human tissue culture revealed the mercurials were extremely toxic for human cells and the Thimerosal — the most active, toxic down to the nanogram. The amounts of mercury have gone down but vaccines still have 100 times that amount when they are in preservative free and reduced thimerosal vaccines.

Something I wrote responding to an article

They knew that Thimerosal was neither efficacious nor safe in 1948
Dr. Morton of the Department of Bacteriology, University of
    Pennsylvania
School of Medicine, Dr. North of the Philadelphia General Hospital,
    and Mr.
Engley of Camp Detrick under a grant from the Council of Pharmacy and
Chemistry, American Medical Association have published an article in
the Journal of the American Medical Association.
This was when drugs came in little white boxes, no hype no pay offs
and Dr’s, Scientist, senators and Congressman’s, journalist had impeccable integrity.
See today’s headlines on Merck ! and ghost written research signed off by crooked well known physicians. Seems every month we hear of a drug
that’s killing or maiming Americans that was OK ed ! by the FDA. and we are worried about our financial agency’s, Senators and Congressman calling
for their dismantling. Where are they in this important issue Oh! I know
most are in the pockets of pharma. you see if it’s a campaign contribution
it can’t be a bribe, so they think.
Remember the flu shots that were bad, thimerosal did not work then and
that was the easiest bacterial contaminant to kill, it could not even do the
job. And looking at this, we now know why ,as there research was
showing us it was worthless and dangerous
It is clear from this research supported by a grant from the American
Medical Association that Thimerosal is neither efficacious nor safe,
    and
should be removed as a preservative in prescription biologics and
pharmaceutical products, as well as from topical over-the-counter
    products
such as Butt-Balm that have Thimerosal present in their formulations
    as an
    active ingredient.
There was an interim plan in the 80’s to get rid of thimerosal this came out at Congressman Burtons hearing on thimerosal. Dr. Engley was reported as saying on an KOMU article that “if they had followed through on our 82 report the vaccines would have been freed of thimerosal and all this autism they tell me would not have occurred”
THEY DESTROYED OUR CHILDREN FOR NO BENEFIT NOT TO MENTION BEING WARNED BY
Dr. Engley and other Scientist with integrity, this is their findings of toxicity
“We found thimerosal is toxic down to a level that is almost unbelievable. Down to 1.10, maybe 100 nanograms…a millionth of a gram and that is about as toxic as you can get,” he said.” But the FDA, and the CDC did not listen 200 PPB is liquid toxic waste the chidren from the 90’s, some received 32,500 Parts Per Billion at one setting on one day. And you wonder what happened to the kids.

“Dr. Frank Engley is a retired chairman and professor of Microbiology at the University of Missouri. He served on various committees and panels and has consulted for the CDC, NASA, the FDA, and EPA. He did some of the first research on the toxicity of thimerosal.
** It should be noted that this article was published in the January
1948 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association
    ## It should be noted that this article was published in 1950 in the
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences

  • joe says:

Jason pair this with what I wrote in the previous post we may well know now why they ignored the 48 warning and the 82 warnings. Certain people wanted this, seems were a experiment that went wrong for as they said “When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for a generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen. As yet there is only one country which has succeeded in creating this politician’s paradise.”11″
seems they did not calculate the coal fired
plant’s the Raymond Palmer study showed that and moms body burden of mercury

Lil too much mercury Huh !

Russell being quoted as saying we would put mercury in vaccines, and other compounds to produce a partial lobotomized state this was done to control the masses.

    Russell
who advocated the use of vaccines to induce partial chemical lobotomies and create a servile zombie population,
“Diet, injections, and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible.” - Bertrand Russell, “The Impact of Science on Society”, 1953, pg 49-50

1953. Bertrand Russell, The Impact of Science on Society: “…the subject which will be of most importance politically is Mass Psychology…. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated. When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for a generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen. As yet there is only one country which has succeeded in creating this politician’s paradise.”11

Jason you cannot win against a well versed parent of a autistic child
for we read everything all science on both sides and most science that’s put out by the CDC is well thought out fraud and in some cases out in out stupidity

  • jason says:

    Goldenberg:

First of all- STOP the name calling. I do not call you people names because you disagree with me and I would appreciate the same in return.

Speaking of shills, perhaps you should take a look at doctors who have a lot of money to gain if their alternative (and dangerously unnecessary) vaccine schedules are adopted. I will provide examples.

I am not a shill and I am not paid by anyone to espouse the views I do. I am more than happy to prove this if need be, but the burden of proof rests on the person throwing the accusations. So far, the only evidence you have that I am a shill is the fact that I don’t agree with you.

Listing a bunch of studies with NO links or descriptions as to what information they cover doesn’t constitute a debate. If you would like to pick out a few of those studies and describe briefly what conclusions they reached and how they reached them I will be glad to engage you.

Do you want to know why I am passionate about this issue? It is simple: Whenever I see irrational, dangerous thinking that puts large groups of people in clear danger, particularly children, I am compelled to act. Whether that be through posting on a blog or taking more publicly visible measures, I refuse to stand quietly while the worst of human nature wreaks havoc upon itself.

Do you want a life expectancy of 50?

Do you want large fractions of children suffering young from preventable, horrible, disfiguring, and often fatal diseases?

Life is about risks- certainly there are risks to vaccinations and I acknowledge those and all risks when they are clearly demonstrated to exist. The point some of you seem to be missing is that your unvaccinated child is only kept safe through herd immunity. The more parents that follow your advice, the less herd immunity we will have as a population.

Then guess what? Instead of saying, “I didn’t vaccinate my kids at all and they’re GREAT!”, you might be visiting your son in his iron lung where he will remain paralyzed for life due to polio. Think it can’t happen? Take a look at Nigeria and other parts of Africa where polio was almost eradicated, only to rise again when people started avoiding vaccines for irrational and false reasons.

And don’t tell me that every study that has been published in a peer reviewed scientific journal is wrong simply because it conflicts with your present beliefs.

If you want to go about this discussion the right way, without name calling and other such nonsense, just say so and I will bring the science. You won’t have to take my word for anything.

  • Garland says:

In the state of ca, we have a medical, philosophical and a religous exemption, it is against the law for any school, public, or private to deny entry of an unvaccinated child with a proper exepmtion.

My children are both unvaccinated, and my eldest is in school, with an exemption for his pediatrician, Dr. Bob Sears.

  • joe says:

If you are wondering Jason why we are so angry it is because of the needless sacrifice of so many children to the God of greed that many
so called prestigious Dr’s sell their souls for very little considering
the damage done to our most valuable and precious resource our
children of the world, not just the US.

  • joe says:

Jason there was actually more polio caused from the polio vaccine
in Africa not from people not vaccinating

  • joe says:

Jason you don’t know when your being challenged you have not answered any of my post all true

  • Tony says:

    Jason,

You miss the point of this blog and the initial discussion. Perhaps the right framework to be talking is whether or not parents have the right to determine the shots and schedule of the shots for their own children. I would hope you would say yes.

It is fact that the number of vaccines recommended for children have increased over the past ten years. Why is that? Is it because we need them? These are questions that ALL parents SHOULD ask.

Take for example the shots for chicken pox. Any rational parent that bares any responsibility to their children’s welfare MUST ask themselves both sides of this question: Does my child really need this shot? Is my son / daughter at risk by not taking this shot or does the “potential” side effects (and I’ll grant you, if any) of the ingredients that are common to vaccines out weigh the gain. Of course, if you are 30 or over, you start to think, at least I hope all RESPONSIBLE parents would, “Hey, I had chicken pox and millions of others for countless of decades had chicken pox and besides being uncomfortable, well, most everyone did just fine. Yes, there are side effects to chicken pox, yes, it can POTENTIALLY be dangerous to kids and elders ….” but there are side effects to vaccines… that’s fact! So, is this shot a necessary risk?

Each parent MUST take the time to honestly weigh through both sides. In my honest opinion, the only IRRESPONSIBLE parents are those that do NOT think through the choices and instead blindly accepts the pediatricians words that there’s a new shot so lets give it. To criticize any parent for doubting their pediatrician, the medical profession as a whole, or the “commonly accepted thought” is to spit in the face of history that has shown us time and time again that no one nor no one institution is perfect. Doctors get things right a lot of the times … but they also get things wrong.

So let’s not put a single blanket over this discussion and say VACCINES are good or VACCINES are bad … there are shades of gray here. Which ones are worth the risk? Which are not? Why are there so many now compared to just 10 years ago? What’s the statistical danger of spreading out the vaccines?

These are good and healthy questions to ask for ANY RESPONSIBLE parent.

First of all Doctor’s don’t know what causes Autism. Period. Next the only correlation between vaccines and Autism is the timing. Autism becomes noticeable and diagnosible around the 15 - 18 month mark. That is also the time in which vaccinations schedules are usually completed. That is why people make the assumption that the vaccines are the cause of Autism. There have been numerous studies and none have found a link between vaccines and Autism. What has occurred are changes in tests to diagnose Autism. These tests in itself can be the reason for the increase in the rate of Autism in the U.S. because they can be diagnosed and documented unlike the past. Even though the studies found no link, because of public concern an ingrediant was taken out and there has been no change one way or the other. There are more serious and deadly problems that can arise from not have certain vaccines that should be of greater concern that a child getting autism from it. I hope my statement doesn’t sound confrontational what so ever. I am merely trying to be informative. My wife is a Doctor and we have discussed this topic a few times regarding our kids and with friends concerned about their children. God bless to all that have to deal with the taxing issues of Autism.

    joe-

Are you claiming that every health care worker should provide services for free? Why should companies that produce and sell health care products and services be viewed as less noble because they make profits on their efforts when companies that sell other products and services are lauded for exactly the same thing?

How can you disparage every individual that works to develop vaccines at once, by claiming they are all part of some grand conspiracy to carelessly make money by dispensing products and services they know are too dangerous? I think you underestimate the extraordinary nature of such a claim and you need to realize that extraordinary claims require a consummate level of evidence.

Where is the evidence for this conspiracy of greed that, as you put it, “sacrifices” children?

As for polio, the live polio vaccine is the best weapon we have against the disease. The proof is empirical: polio was almost eradicated from the world using that vaccine. Many, many more people have been killed or disabled by the virus than the vaccine.

More than 10 billion doses of the polio vaccine have been given since 1988 and this has reduced the instance of polio worldwide by over 99% since then! Less than 100 cases of polio caused by the vaccine have been reported and the mechanism isn’t what you think. Children who receive the vaccine pass the virus into the water supply where it passes on to children who have not received the vaccine. This actually provides a weak vaccination to most of those yet-unvaccinated children but rarely it causes polio instead.

Tragic, but again consider that polio has dropped more than 99% in the past 20 years. Which is the greater good?

Nigerian politicians boycotted the polio vaccine because they claimed it contained HIV the western world was trying to use as a biological weapon against muslims. That led to its dramatic resurgence in Africa. Don’t take my word for it- just google africa and polio together.

Joe, to be honest I have a hard time making sense of your posts. You are quoting Bertrand Russell’s predictions of the future which have clearly not come true…you also have posted some things about how mercury is toxic (of course, no one says otherwise) and how thimerosal is dangerous (yes in certain amounts).

The toxicity of a substance is related directly to how much of that substance is ingested and how it is ingested. Even water can be fatally toxic at certain doses. Merely claiming that a substance is toxic is irrelevant to the topic of vaccines and autism, unless you can produce evidence that shows a certain amount of that substance ingested in a certain way or ways can trigger autism.

Example: Formaldehyde. This is a toxic substance, most people would agree. However, your body needs small amounts of it and even makes it so that it can synthesize DNA and construct proteins from the amino acids you eat.

If you want to discuss toxicity or vaccines or autism, I’m all for it. I just need you to present your position more coherently so I can examine the evidence that underlies your present beliefs.

If a person is vaccinated and that is effective against contracting a disease, then how is it that they could still contract the disease from a non-vaccinated infected person?

Doesn’t that imply that the vaccine wasn’t effective in the first place?

If a family has a history of auto-immune disease, it should be taken into account when vaccinating children. It never is. There is no detailed medical history taken into account when vaccinating an infant. The one-size-fits-all approach has and will continue to wreak havoc on certain subsets of the population. It is sad that the AAP, CDC, & NIH have neglected to research this properly. Just ask Dr. Bernadine Healy…..

And if you’re predisposed with the mitochondrial disorder, it can certainly set off some damage. Some of the symptoms can be symptoms that have characteristics of autism.” oh! by the way my son has very little glutathion one of the bio markers for mito. disorders dysfunction
Seems we found what autism really is. And it seems these people disagree with you .

On Tuesday, March 11, a conference call was held between vaccine safety officials at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, several leading experts in vaccine safety research, and executives from America’s Health Insurance Plans, (the HMO trade association) to discuss childhood mitochondrial dysfunction and its potential link to autism and vaccines.

It was a sobering event for all concerned, and it could soon become known as the Conference Call heard ’round the world.

The teleconference was scheduled by a little known CDC agency called the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) Network, a consortium of six research centers working on “immunization-associated health risks,” in conjunction with the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office and the health insurance lobby — whose companies cover some 200 million Americans.

The hot topic of the day was mitochondria - the little powerhouses within each cell that convert food and oxygen into energy for use by the body. Recent news events have implicated mitochondria in at least one case of regressive autism, following normal development.

Some researchers on the call reported that mitochondrial dysfunction is probably much more common than the current estimate of 1-in-4,000 people. The potential implications for autism, then, are staggering.

“We need to find out if there is credible evidence, theoretically, to support the idea that childhood mitochondrial dysfunction might regress into autism,” one of the callers reportedly told participants.

    “THE CLOCK IS TICKING”

One person on the call (those interviewed for this article asked to remain anonymous) told me that, “the CDC people were informed, in no uncertain terms, that they need to look into this issue immediately, and do something about it.” The clock is ticking, they were told, and if they don’t respond, the information will be made public.

Still, the doctor said, he was enormously impressed by the “seriousness” with which CDC officials treated the possibility of a link between mitochondria, autism and possibly vaccines as well.

    1-in-50 GENETIC RISK?

On the call, speculation on the prevalence of a genetic mutation that could confer mild mitochondrial dysfunction in the general population ranged from about 1-in-400, to a staggering 1-in-50, or 2% of all Americans.

There was talk about the urgent need to do mapping studies, and find the locus of this gene. Some of the researchers said they want to test all 30 children for the actual DNA mutation. There was some expectation that they might discover that the mutation goes back generations, so parents and grandparents might be tested as well.

One belief is that a particular mutated gene may have become prevalent over the centuries, because of selective advantage. Mild mitochondrial dysfunction reportedly has been associated with intelligence, because it can increase activity of the brain’s NMDA receptors. A large number of receptors can produce increased intelligence, but it can also increase risk of brain disease, one doctor explained to me. It’s possible that increased receptor activity acts in same way.

But not everyone agrees that mitochondrial dysfunction is a purely inherited affair. Some researchers believe that, while a susceptibility gene for mitochondrial problems certainly exists, some type of environmental trigger, or “adversity,” as one doctor put it, is needed to turn the mutation into a dysfunction.

The medical literature is replete with studies on mitochondrial health and the adverse impact of mercury, aluminum and other toxins. Even AIDS drugs like AZT and prenatal alcohol consumption can damage mitochondria and impact cellular energy.

The mercury-containing vaccine preservative, thimerosal, for example, “can definitely kill cells in vitro through the mitochondria,” one teleconference participant told me. “And some people are beginning to suspect that the dose of hepatitis B vaccine given at birth might be interfering with proper mitochondrial function in certain children.”

While the cause of mitochondrial dysfunction is up for the debate, so too is its potential effect on regressive autism.

One theory currently in circulation about what happened to Hannah and other children like her, is an apparent “triple domino effect.” According to this hypothesis, it takes three steps and two triggers to get to some types of autism, and it goes like this:

STEP ONE: Child is conceived and born healthy, but with an underlying nuclear DNA genetic susceptibility to mitochondrial dysfunction, inherited from dad.

TRIGGER ONE: An early environmental “adversity” occurs in the womb or during the neonatal period, perhaps caused by prenatal exposure to heavy metals, pollutants, pesticides and medicines. Or, it occurs in early infancy, through environmental toxins, thimerosal exposure, or even the Hepatitis B vaccine “birth dose.” This trigger results in:

STEP TWO: Child develops mild, usually asymptomatic mitochondrial dysfunction (though I wonder if the ear infections and eczema so common in these cases might also be symptoms of mito problems).

TRIGGER TWO: Child, now with an underlying mitochondrial dysfunction, suffers over-stimulation of the immune system beyond the capacity of his or her metabolic reserves. This stress is either via a viral febrile infection, or from multiple vaccinations, as in the Poling case. This trigger results in:

STEP THREE: Acute illness, seizures, encephalopathy, developmental regression, autism.

Such a scenario might help explain why autism has increased right along with the addition of more vaccines to the national schedule.

And it might help explain why autism rates are not plummeting now that thimerosal levels have been significantly reduced in most childhood vaccines.

It’s possible that exposures from the flu shot, and residual mercury left over in other vaccines — perhaps in synergistic effect with aluminum used as an “adjuvant” to boost the immune response - might “contribute to the toxic mix that causes childhood mitochondrial dysfunction in the first place,” one of the doctors said.

This unexpected discovery would clearly implicate nuclear DNA inheritance, and not mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited only through the mother.

Gerberding and others had previously insisted that Hannah and her mother, Teri Poling, both had the same single point mutation in their mitochondrial DNA. CDC officials asserted that Hannah had a pre-existing disease, a rare genetic glitch in her mitochondria, that may well have manifested as “features of autism” on its own, perhaps even without an environmental trigger.

“It’s not in the mitochondrial DNA, and it’s not rare,” one participant confirmed. In fact, he said, many people probably carry the nuclear DNA mutation that confers susceptibility to mitochondrial dysfunction, they just don’t know it.. Seems the CDC poses a greater threat than do any terrorist.

Merely claiming that a substance is toxic is irrelevant to the topic of vaccines and autism, unless you can produce evidence that shows a certain amount of that substance ingested in a certain way or ways can trigger autism

It was a man from the CDC that said injection mercury is much worse than ingested mercury for the ingested goes through the bodys filters

Keep in mind every multi dose vial contained 50,000 ppb some children recieved 9 vacc’s on one day 7 of which contained ethyl-
mercury breaking down the multi dose vials we have a grand total of 32,500 ppb on one single day a Bolus dose ,according to Dr. Hillaman
who worked for merck he created their vaccine program for children
he tried to warn merck by saying on the next vaccine sched. the children will be getting 87 times the EPA daily dose he said this
is not daily doses it is bolus doses all at once when veiwed in this manner it is rather a large dose. So you are right when you said
this “unless you can produce evidence that shows a certain amount of that substance ingested in a certain way or ways can trigger autism”
I believe I have done just that

Surley you don’t condone 32,500 PPB ethyl. and that’s just one, theres Aluminum, Formaldahyde, MSG, Antifreeze,
what kind of fool put’s this garbage? in a vaccine for children. Keep in mind 200 PPB is liquid toxic waste . . .

Were not even talking synergy effect of the two salts mixed mercury and aluminum when you mix the two they become super toxins with a killing factor x 10 of brain cells. Then factor in a lot of these kids have high testosterone a Yale university study said for the first time it has been shown that high testosterone causes catastrophic loss of brain cells. They were not looking at our kids per say they were looking at steroids when I talked to the lead author of the study she was amazed that vaccines for children contained mercury and aluminum. Now if that is not bad enough some of these kids start chewing after vaccines, my suspicion was confirmed by Kennedy krieger they said they have noticed that the worse kids were pika kids that chewed everything. So how many years has china been sending lead tanted toys ? so we have three metals mixed and high testosterone killing these kids brain cells not to mention MSG and other toxins in the vaccines and the experts wonder where all this damage is coming from, and keep looking for that elusive gene named autism . . .

Sorry, Joe. I can’t understand much of your posts because of the run on and fragmented sentences and indecipherable grammar. You are also just copying large portions of text from other websites and just pasting it in the comment window…and you make outrageous claims with no evidence. I’m afraid you and I cannot have a meaningful conversation on this or probably any topic.

Denise, I’m not sure you understand what happens with polio vaccines in some underdeveloped countries. Perhaps I wasn’t clear. Let me rephrase.

Let’s say 100 children get the live polio vaccine and 50 children in the same village do not. The 100 children who were vaccinated excrete the weak virus, mostly through urine, and because of the nature of the water supplies in these countries, the excreted vaccine enters the drinking water.

Now, when those 50 non-vaccinated children drink that water, they actually get a small dose of the vaccine. This is a weaker vaccine and is not considered a substitute for a regular dose. In very rare cases however, this vector will cause a non-vaccinated child to contract polio.

This is something that has been and is being studied closely so that improvements can be made, but all things considered…this problem is absolutely minuscule compared to the polio problem that existed before the vaccine.

Since we can’t yet reach 0 cases per year (although we were closing in on that recently), is it better to have less than 100 cases of polio from the vaccine in the past 10 years, or millions of cases worldwide every year?

Perhaps you can explain to me the relationship between a family history of auto-immune disease and potential for harm from vaccinations? Are there studies on this? As someone who suffers from an auto-immune disease I am genuinely interested. I have not heard anything of it before.

It is a shame that parents are characterized in belligerent ways because they question vaccines. The federal government should reevaluate its recommended schedule and states should closely reexamine their vaccine requirement schedules for school-age children. No evidence exists proving that administering multiple vaccines on the current state and federal schedules is safe.

I would have more confidence in vaccines and state vaccination requirements for school-age children if I knew that the vaccines had been added because of sound study results and true widespread outbreaks. It is a shame that this generation of children has to serve as guinea pigs for some unnecessary products, such as the hepatitis A, B, flu and varicella vaccines, to name a few.

The flu DOES kill that many people every year, although most of those are elderly and very young children. Luckily we have vaccines, including thimerosal-free flu vaccines, to prevent the flu.

Influenza can be extremely deadly when it mutates, as it did with the Spanish Flu in the early 20th century. It killed millions of people worldwide, most notable healthy young adults with no pre-existing conditions. This mutation has been traced to the virus interacting with bird flu virus- not a situation that is altogether unfamiliar today, is it?

You have presented no proof of your #2 point.

If you have a problem with someone’s evidence then attack it with evidence of your own. Not your opinion. Not mere speculation.

  • jason says:

    Megan-

    You said the following:

“It is a shame that parents are characterized in belligerent ways because they question vaccines. The federal government should reevaluate its recommended schedule and states should closely reexamine their vaccine requirement schedules for school-age children. No evidence exists proving that administering multiple vaccines on the current state and federal schedules is safe.”

Who is characterizing you or other parents as belligerent? You need to be able to accept criticism of what you believe without taking it personal. Speaking only for myself, I am not treating you or any other vaccine dissenter in that way but I will speak out firmly against a position you hold. I will not call you names or personally attack you. I admire your diligence in trying to protect your children. I just wish that effort was directed in a more meaningful way.

There is no evidence that the current vaccine schedule is dangerous. You need to present that evidence since you are the one making the claim that it is dangerous. Empirical evidence alone suggests the current schedule is not, generally speaking, dangerous. The more rigorous scientific studies that have been conducted around the world backs up those observations.

While the number of vaccinations is greater today than in the past, this alone is hardly cause for alarm. The number of antigens- the particles in the vaccines that stimulate the immune system -is far lower today than ever before. The original smallpox vaccine contained more antigens than all of the recommended childhood vaccines today COMBINED. There is less stimulation of the immune system now than ever before by vaccines.

Like most products, vaccines have become safer and more efficient over time. They have also grown stronger and more effective in preventing a wider range of disease. This is progress!

I fully recognize vaccinations present a risk to the vaccinated. I support the existence of a government fund to help those who are harmed by vaccines. I support close, government funded study of vaccines in order to spot possible dangers (like autism). But the evidence presented thus far is so compelling that I find the most likely explanation is that vaccines are quite safe in most instances and their widespread application contributes greatly to a better quality of life for everyone, even the non-vaccinated.

If you want to focus on other things in the vaccine besides the stimulating antigens, I’m completely open to that too.

  • Megan says:

    Jason-

Parents are criticized for questioning the safety of and need for some vaccines. Some of the entries on this blog exemplify this; Actress, Amanda Peet’s recent comment that parents are “parasites” for not vaccinating their children is another example. I don’t take it personally, but I believe these negative comments redirect the spotlight on the character of the parent instead of focusing the discussion on an extremely important issue at hand: safety studies on the federal vaccination recommendations and state vaccination requirement schedules are needed.

You mention the fact that individual vaccines have gotten safer; this is where the vaccine discussion becomes blurry. Most children aren’t getting just one vaccine that has been proven safe. Instead, they are administered dozens – 26 by the age of two if you follow the recommendations; some states require more in order to children to go to school. Vaccinations are administered in multiple batches because most children receive the vaccines at their well-baby visits, which don’t occur on a monthly basis. There are adverse events associated with individual vaccines – what are the risks when they are given in multiple batches within 2 years? The bottom line is that there is no evidence supporting the fact that administering multiple vaccines on current vaccine recommended schedule is safe at this age.

As a parent, I am looking for answers.

  • jason says:

    Megan-

Again, you are attempting to shift the burden of truth to another entity when it is yours to bear.

“. . .there is no evidence supporting the fact that administering multiple vaccines on current vaccine recommended schedule is safe at this age.”

Well, for starters, the current vaccine schedule has never been proven to have caused harm to anyone. That isn’t to say a vaccine has never harmed someone- certainly this has happened and although it is exceedingly rare, I acknowledge the risk is there.

The empirical evidence, the fact that the overwhelming majority of children who receive vaccines according to the typical schedule experience no health problems isn’t compelling to you in the least bit? I’m not even bringing up the scientific studies from around the world at this point in the discussion.

In any case, if you are making a claim that the current vaccine schedule is dangerous for some or all individuals then you need to produce evidence that clearly shows such a relationship.

Amanda Peet’s comment was distasteful, a needlessly personal attack, but I get her point. Non-vaccinated children receive the benefit of herd immunity while posing a danger to the other members of the herd. I would not characterize these people as parasites, but they are clearly taking advantage of those who are immunized and providing no benefit to the herd through their lack of immunizations.

The VAERS reports document that there have been 38 reports of Guillain-Barre Syndrome among girls who received the Gardasil vaccine. The VAERS reports also reveal as many as 18 young girls and women have died after receiving the vaccine. Of the eighteen deaths, eleven of them occurred less than a week after receiving the vaccine, and seven in less than two days. The most common diagnosed cause was blood clotting.

But the CDC said It had nothing to do with the vaccine that the girls were going to die anyway.

    Legal Bombshell in
In what can only be described as a legal bombshell, the government has withdrawn two of its three expert reports claiming that thimerosal has no connection to autism. The expert reports are from Dr. Thomas Clarkson and Dr. Laszlo Magos, two world-renowned in the field of toxicology, who have been working in medicine from the late 1950s and early 1960s.

A PubMed search under Clarkson lists 21 published articles concerning mercury and Magos worked for the prestigious Medical Research Council Laboratories in England, as well as co-authoring 4 articles on mercury with Dr. Clarkson.

In fact, Drs. Magos and Clarkson have been such cheerleaders for mercury that their work is high-lighted on a curious web-site http://www.mercuryfacts.org which takes issue with the finding from the National Academy of Sciences that at least 60,000 children in the United States are at risk from prenatal exposure to mercury from the consumption of fish by pregnant women.

The web-site is set-up by a group called the “Center for Consumer Freedom” and its research director is named David Martosko. According to a story by reporter Mark Matthews which ran on the ABC Channel 7 affiliate in San Francisco on May 3, 2006, Martosko was a music major in college, then an AM radio talk show producer before becoming the chief researcher for the Center for Consumer Freedom. The group came in for some harsh criticism in the story as being nothing more than a “non-profit front” for lobbying firms to “push their corporate message.”

If this case was in the civil arena, the withdrawal of two expert reports of such magnitude would in all likelihood result in sanctions or a directed verdict. It’s akin to two of the three alibi witnesses in a murder trial deciding to skip their testimony. There’s no way to spin this as a positive development for the defense

Drs. Magos and Clarkson were apparently unwilling or unable to testify about the substance of their report which left the attorneys for the families having to call a witness to rebut the two expert reports. Surprisingly, the government then chose to withdraw the expert reports, leaving only the report and testimony of Dr. Jeffrey Brent, a scientist who has not devoted significant time to the question of mercury and autism. (At one point in his career it’s alleged that Dr. Brent claimed thimerosal to be as safe as “drinking water.”)

I believe he Dr. Brent got that thimerosal was useless as water as a antimicrobial from Dr. Engley mixed up with what he said

Brent claimed thimerosal to be as safe as “drinking water

Irregardless I would like to see if he would drink some since he is so sure it is so safe

So how many years has china been sending lead tanted toys ? so we have three metals mixed and high testosterone killing these kids brain cells not to mention MSG and other toxins in the vaccines and the experts wonder where all this damage is coming from, and keep looking for that elusive gene named autism . . .

    Elevated Testosterone Kills Nerve Cells
    Published: September 26, 2006

New Haven, Conn. — A Yale School of Medicine study shows for the first time that a high level of testosterone, such as that caused by the use of steroids to increase muscle mass or for replacement therapy, can lead to a catastrophic loss of brain cells.

Taking large doses of androgens, or steroids, is known to cause hyperexcitability, a highly aggressive nature, and suicidal tendencies. These behavioral changes could be evidence of alterations in neuronal function caused by the steroids, said the senior author, Barbara Ehrlich, professor of pharmacology and physiology.

We tend to be relatively concrete in our thinking. Probably one of the big cultural events, at least for me, was when Dr. Clarkson repetitively pointed out to us that we just didn’t get it about uncertainty (factors), and he was actually quite right.”

    Are autistic kids using steroids?

Is Autism caused by a catastrophic loss of brain cells?

Do you even read the things you post?

  • joe says:

Jason some of the kids with autism have their glutathione damaged so badly by the mercury in vaccines and prenatal they cannot regulate their testosterone and their little body’s get stuck in the open position making testosterone in fact the difference of 4 to 1 ratio boys to girls for autism is because some girls have less estrogen and more testosterone that is usually the girls that end up autistic. Estrogen naturally pushes mercury away, testosterone pulls in mercury and exaserbates the killing of the cells

The Yale study found the exact same thing that estrogen protects
    from damage to the cells

Are autistic kids using steroids? No but their glutathione is so low
    they cannot stop manufacturing testosterone

Is Autism caused by a catastrophic loss of brain cells?
That and damage from thimerosal turning to inorganic mercury
and destroying the glutathione in the mito - cells along with
oxidative stress have been found in autistics brains from kids that have died

    autism is not a psychological disorder it’s a it’s a biological medical
disorder that manifests it self psychologically

There for when you give antipsychotics you are only masking the behavior when you remove the heavy metals you are stopping the behavior and giving the child’s body a chance to heal and may completely come out of autism completely
You see if we had a decent NIH CDC FDA AAP they would put centers
where autistic children that test positive for heavy metal poisoning
could get the chelation therapy and hyperbaric chambers to repair the brain cells you see it, hyperbarics works on burn victims and chronic sores in diabetics

You see all this ties together and is the puzzle of autism but all the CDC will research is genetics

  • Tom says:

Just an open question for the parents of Autistic children: What would it take to convince you that there is no link between vaccines and Autism? It is clear from your posts that none of you trust the medical establishment, the government, your own physicians, researchers, and certainly not the companies making the stuff. Several of us have cited facts and figures from the most reputable of sources only to have them discredited by all of you as being a part of some sinister conspiracy. So what will it take?

Earlier in this thread I asserted that if there was even the tiniest bit of evidence showing a link there would be countless successful lawsuits. Do you disagree with that assertion? If a woman can prove that she did not know McDonald’s coffee would scald her why can’t any of you prove to a jury that vaccines gave your chidren Autism?

  • jason says:

Joe, if the autistic children truly do have testosterone levels equal to that of a person who uses extremely large amounts of synthetic androgens, why do these kids lack the symptoms of such a practice? Surely you are aware of what happens to people who use large amounts of synthetic testosterone and other steroids.

These include gynecomastia, emergence of pubic and facial hair, enlargement of the genitals (only in pre-pubescents), deepening of the voice, changes in facial structure, and other puberty-like characteristics.

But this is all just useless conversation really. You have yet to show me just one study that supports a single claim you have made. Until you do so, I am done responding to you.

  • jason says:

Tom, it’s going to take a D-list celebrity who used to host a dating game show on MTV going on Oprah and claiming vaccines do not cause autism. Clearly.

  • J says:

Jenny McCarthy merely suggests delaying vaccines, not denying them.

  • Megan says:

    Tom –

In response to your question – I do not have an autistic child, so I may be talking out of turn, but I am a mother and I know mothers who are convinced vaccines triggered their children’s autism. As a mother who has parental instincts, I would not question their conviction or demean them for making such an assumption.

Dr. Bernadine Healy, former head of the NIH, recently remarked that better studies are needed which investigate the potential autism=vaccine link. In fact in the same interview she stated, “I think that the public health officials have been too quick to dismiss the hypothesis as irrational.” And while government officials haven’t been able to make the link that does not mean a link does not exist – more studies are needed.

I don’t know if you are a parent, so forgive me if I am painting an already familiar picture. As a mother (parent), you tune into everything your child does – perhaps it’s biological/hormonal or just part of the “job” – but as a mother (or parent) you notice every sniffle, poop, sneeze, if your child is crabbier than yesterday or this morning, if he/she ate more than the meal before. In addition, we are conditioned to follow the “milestones.” We are given pamphlets and books – we are told at what age our child should coo, smile, roll-over and laugh for the first time. We are told to look for “red flags.”

With this landscape in mind, imagine this: perhaps you watch with joy as your child develops on track as per the “milestones” – she’s starting to use words, she hugs you affectionately and calls you “daddy” or “mommy” by name, which makes you melt inside and out. You go to the doctor for your child’s well-baby visit. You are given a piece of paper from the CDC that outlines the recommended vaccination schedule, risks of the vaccines (mild-fever, redness and swelling at site, moderate-seizures, non-stop crying, high fever, severe-serious allergic reaction, long-term seizures, brain damage) and why you should perhaps not vaccinate your child or wait. But you are already in the office and the medical professional assures you that vaccines are safe – even multiple vaccines. Your child is given 3-4-5 shots at once. Perhaps that night or a few days later your child has a seizure or high temperature or perhaps they simply drift into their own world with little to no communication; this is enough evidence for those parents.

There have been plenty of examples of drugs that have been put to market based on safety studies only to be pulled from the market after-the-fact because of unforeseen adverse reactions and so forth. The rotavirus vaccine is an example. It is not out of line to say that one or two studies are not enough on to prove the safety of a product. Also, as I said before on this blog, I think that the vaccine discussion is extremely complicated. Rarely are children administered just one vaccine at a time; children are given multiple combo-vaccines that come from different companies with no safety studies backing them up. Unfortunately, nobody in the medical or health profession seems to be looking at this - the big picture – the schedules.

Jenny McCarthy may bring more press to the issue, but her story doesn’t replace the experience of all of the other parents who can describe similar scenarios. The same is true with Amanda Peet’s uncompassionate words – her opinion probably won’t deter a parent from trying to make a smart, informed decision. I have a ton of empathy and compassion for parents who have and will go through the experience I outlined above. First-hand experience can’t and shouldn’t be dismissed by an incomplete study on a complicated subject.

My grandma used to say to me: walk a mile in someone’s shoes before you past judgement. (I thought she was brilliant until I saw the inspiration book in her bedroom with the quote….) She was brilliant to share this and I think today our community could learn from these valuable words.

While you can create a study to derive whatever conclusions you want - it is hard to deny watching a child crumble in front of you. Especially when it is your child.

I think the hardest part for most families and why they hang onto this “issue” are these two points:
    1) Autism used to be defined in the medical literature as “different from birth.”
    2) Many families have reported their children to have a “normal period of development” and certain milestones achieved… then milestones lost and skill sets lost - like speech, gross, fine motor and other issues. Then new medical symptoms and issues crop up that were not there before or in the family history.

If this is not the case in your family - I am so glad. It is anything but fun and mostly heartbreaking, terrifying and frustrating. If this is the case in your family - I am truly sorry. That is why we have to keep looking for answers for all children and not leave any behind.

  • jason says:

    Megan-

You said, “. . .children are given multiple combo-vaccines that come from different companies with no safety studies backing them up. ”

There is not a single vaccine on the market in the United States that has not gone through the extensive drug approval process. Am I misunderstanding you or do you know of such vaccines?

Regarding the “multiple combo-vaccines”- the objections here are irrational and not based on facts, but rather erroneous assumptions. Let me illustrate for you and then tell me what you think.

A vaccine is made up of several different substances. As you probably are aware, it is mostly a saline solution with a preservative to keep it from going bad (protection for the vaccinated) and a number of antigens that stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies for the disease being vaccinated against.

Vaccine manufacturers, over the years, have been able to reduce the number of antigens needed to provide complete vaccination. Today, the entire recommended childhood vaccination schedule contains less antigens than the single smallpox vaccine that was given a few decades ago. Children today are exposed to fewer antigens than ever before.

So it is important to focus not on the number of vaccines but rather how much of the active ingredient the child is being exposed to. And like I said, it is lower than ever. After all, would it be better, in your mind, if a child received half the shots they do now, but double the number of antigens, resulting in twice the dose of vaccine they presently receive?

You say,”Unfortunately, nobody in the medical or health profession seems to be looking at this - the big picture – the schedules.”

This is not true. There have been studies done on schedules- I have read several of them myself and can link you to them if you would like. But if you want to talk about the big picture then you must realize that a child’s immune system is exposed to many, many more times the number of immune system-stimulating antigens, viruses, bacteria, etc., than the vaccines provide.

Are a few drops of water on your head going to make you more wet after a bucket of water has been poured over top of you?

Now if your objection is not to the active ingredient in vaccines but the other substances in vaccines then we can go down that route too. Lots of science there from around the world, and general toxicity amounts for those substances are very well-known.

  • Lisa says:

    Jason

Thank you. I would love the reference to the safety schedules posted on this web site for all the current, routinely scheduled vaccines. Thanks for the offer.

  • jason says:

Lisa, I’m not sure exactly what you are asking me for. Scientific studies showing that multiple vaccines are safe?

What safety schedules are posted on this website? Where can I find those?

Sorry for the confusion. I am happy to oblige once I get a clear picture of what you would like to see.

  • jesse's mom says:

This vaccine discussion seems to have come to an abrupt end. However, some items for thought, per Jasons comments:
    1. Our systems are bombarded with numerous invaders every day, true. The skin provides the barrier that keeps the majority of these from ever needing an immune system response. Injections breach that barrier- therefore, the comparison between daily bombarded with antigens, bacteria, etc., and vaccine injections is invalid.
    2. Pharma companies employ lobbyists, who quite often are able to circumvent or manipulate approvals through political and financial affiliations. Despite the fact that pharmaceuticals are perceived as scientific ventures, remember- pharma companies are like any other- they exist to make a profit, not to benefit society.
    3. The risk from vaccines is downplayed. The oft-quoted number for reaction from the DtaP shot, for example, is 100 children in every 10,000 shots ( I do have a link and will provide on request) results in a severe reaction such as seizure, encephalopathy, or even death. It is said to be “rare” .First, the comparison of children to shots is like apples to oranges. Remember, children get 5 Dtap shots each over the course of the immunization schedule, so those 10,000 shots are administered to 2,000 children. That is a severe reaction rate of 5%, if the 100 children per 10,000 shots(2,000 children) is correct. The death rate from measles, by contrast, is 1 in 250, is touted as high, and is used to push measles vaccination despite the fact that the death rate is less than 1/2 of 1%.

Just some info to chew on. I’m not anti-vaccination and my son has had his, albeit on a revised schedule.

  • jason says:

Woah, jesse’s mom…are you saying you would be comfortable with a disease running wild in the United States that had a .5% mortality rate?

Do you realize how deadly that is?

The Spanish Flu in 1918 that killed something like 40 million people worldwide had a 2.5% mortality rate. Every flu epidemic since then has been less than .1%. A .5% mortality rate for disease that is transmitted as easily as measles would cause unimaginable panic in today’s society.

Incidentally, the mortality rate for measles in 3rd world countries is 10%. In those with weak immune systems, the mortality rate is 30%. Are you comfortable with those numbers? Would you consider that a problem for a country that only you lived in?

As for your first point about the skin obviating the need for a large immune response, is that merely conjecture or do you have evidence to back it up? What about exposure to pathogens in food and water? What about airborne pathogens? What about pathogens on surfaces you touch and then transfer to mucous membranes such as the eyes and nose?

Do you think a vaccination exposes a person to more immune-stimulating antigens than what they are normally exposed to in a day? A week? A month?

Your second point is merely a non-sequiter. Lobbyists are employed by almost every industry and they are an important component of free speech. This in and of itself does not prove anything about Pharma companies at all. Pharma companies only make a profit when they produce drugs that serve to improve the quality of life and limit disease.

Do doctors only care about making a profit? Teachers? Do you care only about making a profit in your job? How can you characterize every single person that works in the pharmaceutical industry with one broad stroke that says GREED? Corporations are just groups of individuals- there is no logical reason to treat them as some hive-mind bent on making money and nothing else.
